What is the difference between a password and a passphrase?
A password is a random string like ‘T#7mXqP2!kLs9vR’. A passphrase is a series of random words like ‘cloud-river-music-hammer’ that is easier to remember but can be equally secure at 4 or more words. Switch between the two modes using the Mode dropdown. Passphrases are recommended when you need to type the credential by hand.
How long should a secure password be in 2025?
Security experts recommend at least 16 characters for account passwords and 20+ for high-value accounts like banking or email. The generator defaults to 16 characters, which is strong enough for most uses. Longer is always better as each character added multiplies the combinations an attacker must try.
What does excluding ambiguous characters do?
Ambiguous characters like the letter O and zero (0), or lowercase l and the number 1, look nearly identical in many fonts. Enabling ‘Exclude Ambiguous’ removes these characters from the password, making it easier to read and type accurately without reducing security significantly given the many other characters still available.
