Understanding Aspect Ratios

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height of an image or screen. It is expressed as W:H (width to height) and remains constant regardless of actual size.
For example, both 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 share the same 16:9 ratio. The decimal form (1.778) is calculated by dividing width by height.
In 1892, Thomas Edison established the 4:3 ratio based on 35mm film, matching human binocular vision (155 x 120 degrees). This became the standard for silent films and early television.
In the 1980s, Dr. Kerns H. Powers proposed 16:9 as the geometric mean between 4:3 and 2.39:1, making it ideal for displaying both old TV and widescreen content.
CinemaScope debuted in 1953 using anamorphic lenses to squeeze wide images onto 35mm film. The standard evolved from 2.35:1 to 2.39:1 in 1970 (SMPTE revision) to hide film splices.
Today, most theatrical releases use either 1.85:1 (Flat) for character-focused films or 2.39:1 (Scope) for epic landscapes and action sequences.
16:9 became the HDTV standard in the late 1990s, replacing the 4:3 format. All modern TVs, monitors, and streaming platforms use this ratio as the default.
