How it works
An invoice generator computes the grand total of a business invoice by calculating a subtotal from the line items (quantity times unit price), applying a discount as a percentage or a flat amount, then adding tax on the after-discount amount.

The invoice total formula
The grand total is built up in four steps:
Subtotal = sum(quantity × unit price)
After discount = Subtotal − discount
Tax = After discount × (tax rate ÷ 100)
Total = After discount + Tax
The discount is applied before tax, so a 10% discount on a $1,000 subtotal reduces the taxable base to $900 before tax is added. Only one discount mode applies at a time: a percentage of the subtotal, or a fixed amount.
Getting paid faster
- Send immediately: invoice as soon as the work is delivered. Delays in sending lead to delays in paying.
- State clear terms: put the due date and accepted payment methods in the notes field, not buried in an email.
- Follow up: a reminder a few days before the due date, and again the day it becomes overdue, recovers most late payments.
- Offer an early-payment discount: 1 to 2% off for payment within 10 days is a common incentive on longer terms.
What this tool does not do
This is a calculation and document tool only: it does not email the invoice, track payment status, connect to accounting software, or store your records anywhere. It does not convert currencies; the currency selector only changes the symbol and decimal places shown. Download or print the invoice and send it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
What is the invoice total calculation formula?
Subtotal is the sum of quantity times unit price for every line item. The discount amount is the subtotal times the discount percent divided by 100, or the flat dollar amount entered. After-discount value is the subtotal minus the discount. Tax is the after-discount value times the tax rate divided by 100. The grand total is the after-discount value plus tax.
Can I apply both a percentage discount and a flat discount?
The calculator supports one discount mode at a time, either a percentage off the subtotal or a fixed flat amount. Switch between the two with the discount type control before entering a value. The discount is applied before tax, so a 10% discount on a $1,000 subtotal reduces the taxable base to $900 before tax is added.
Which currencies does the invoice generator support?
The calculator supports USD, EUR, GBP, JPY and KRW. The currency symbol and decimal places update throughout the invoice when you change the currency selector, using zero decimal places for JPY and KRW as those currencies have no minor unit. The tool does not convert between currencies.
Can I download the invoice as a PDF, or print it?
Yes. The calculator draws the invoice directly as PDF text and vector graphics in your browser, so the file has selectable text and stays small, and it only adds a second page when the line items genuinely do not fit on one. To print, download the PDF and print it from your PDF viewer, which prints cleanly without the rest of the page. There is also a Copy as text option. The invoice date defaults to today and the due date to today plus 30 days; both are editable.
Does this invoice generator send invoices or track payments?
No. This is a calculation and document generation tool only. It does not email invoices, track payment status, connect to accounting software, or store records anywhere; everything stays in your browser until you download, print or copy it. For invoicing with payment tracking, use dedicated software instead.
