Understanding Crop Factor
What is Crop Factor?
Crop factor is the ratio of a camera sensor’s size compared to full frame (35mm). A smaller sensor “crops” the image, making lenses appear to have a longer focal length.
Field of View
Field of view (FoV) is the angle of the scene captured. It depends on both focal length and sensor size. Shorter focal lengths = wider FoV, longer = narrower FoV.
Practical Implications
A 50mm lens on APS-C gives the same FoV as 75mm on full frame. This is advantageous for telephoto work but makes wide-angle shooting more challenging on crop sensors.
